INTRODUCTION TO SAKE & FOOD PAIRING

(Vegan and Non-Vegan Classes)

1.5 - 3 HOURS

Sake (or nihonshu) is a Japanese alcoholic beverage made by fermenting polished rice whose bran has been removed. It is served at varying temperatures from cold to hot.

In both our Vegan and Non-Vegan Sake and Food Pairing Classes, learn the basics about sake: sake history, sake characteristics and how it is brewed - akin to beer - from special sake rice (sakamai). Five main types of sake - Junmai, Daiginjo, Honjozo and Ginjo - will be discussed, and students will sample five different regional brands.

The accompanying cooking demonstration will offer instruction on how to prepare three vegan or non-vegan otsumami (small dishes) and dry snacks which complement all types of sake.

The sake brands we select for our classes are chosen by the instructor, Shizuka Wakashita, for their distinctive flavors and qualities.

This class is appropriate for both novices and professionals.
